The story of Riley Roo

The fabulous Mr. Riley Roo entered my life as a senior rescue, a sweet soul who had been found on the streets, shuffled through a city shelter and then onto a senior rescue before finding his forever home with me.

Accompanied with only the rescue medical documents, their associated notes, and two heartwarming ‘adopt me’ photos, there was nothing that truly spoke to the life he had led before he went from someone’s roadside trash to my most precious treasure.

Guessed at somewhere between 7 and 10 years old, his toothless smile and eyes clouded with cataracts contained at least 2,550 days/7 years of untold stories and each one left me with a myriad of questions and yet not a single answer.

Why did stairs seem to perplex him? Why did the sound of a can opening send him into full blown zoomies? How did he end up on the streets? Did he have a family? Did he miss them?

As the years went by the pile of unanswered questions grew, leading to a stark realization that the tools needed to explore his past, understand his present, and safeguard his future were simply not sufficient— more-so they were non-existent.

Riley wasn’t just any pet; he was the light of my life, my best friend, the one who made every day brighter.

Yet, discovering that his vibrant life— 2,550 days—had been condensed to a few lines was profoundly unfair. They overlooked who he truly was —a recognition he deserved.

Faced with these shortfalls, I resolved to change the narrative. If the necessary tools were limited or non-existent, well…let’s invent them.

Hence, after Riley’s passing, I vowed to create a space where every ‘Riley Roo’ could be fully celebrated.

Motivated and inspired by Riley’s memory, my amazing team and I shaped this vision into a reality, a reality we would like to share with you today!
